The South Korean Unification Ministry says flood relief aid for North Korea from the South Korean Red Cross has been delivered to the North’s city of Sinuiju.
Ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-ju told reporters that instant noodles, which are the first part of the humanitarian shipments, were delivered to Sinuiju on Thursday and that more will be delivered on Friday. In all, the Red Cross will have delivered three million packages of instant noodles to the North before the weekend.
Lee added that rice and cement will enter North Korea via Dandong Port in China starting the first week of November after relevant procedures, including customs inspections, are concluded.
The South Korean Red Cross expressed its intent to provide aid on August 26th after hearing that Sinuiju and other areas in North Korea sustained extensive flood damage due to summer rains.
North Korea had initially requested rice, heavy machinery and building materials.
