The North Korean military on Friday fired two shots toward a South Korean military guard post near the border in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province.
An official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Friday that two shots were fired around 5:26 p.m. from a North Korean military guard post toward a South Korean post, which immediately returned fire with three shots as agreed under the rules of engagement.
The official said that the posts are one-point-three kilometers away from each other, adding that there was no damage from the North Korean shots.
The official said after returning fire, South Korea issued two warnings that it would respond strongly and sternly if the North makes any further provocations.
The JCS official added that it hasn't been confirmed whether the North Korean military’s actions were deliberate.
The United Nations Command (UNC) will reportedly send a special investigation team to determine whether the North had violated terms of the armistice that ended the Korean War.
