Gov't: Reports of NK Reactor Yet to be Confirmed

Written: 2010-11-15 07:12:03Updated: 2010-11-15 08:40:24

A senior South Korean government official says media reports suggesting that North Korea is building an experimental light-water nuclear reactor at its Yongbyon nuclear facility have yet to be confirmed.

The official told reporters, however, that if such a move is being pursued by the North, it would not be desirable.

He warned that North Korea has, in the past, sought to intimidate by showcasing its nuclear capabilities.

He said the goal of all parties involved should be on denuclearization rather than negotiating with the North. He said that if it is left to the North to pursue progress, positive developments will be unlikely.
