3 Korean Intangible Cultural Properties Await UNESCO List

Three cultural properties belonging to South Korea are expected to be added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea said the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage under way in Nairobi will decide on Tuesday which properties to add to the Representative List of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The three properties South Korea expects will be included on the list are Korean falconry, traditional master architects “Daemokjang,” and “Gagok,” which are slow-paced traditional musical performances with lyrics derived from poetry known as "sijo" accompanied by an orchestra.

Currently, there are eight South Korean intangible cultural properties included on the UNESCO list. Among them are the royal ancestral rituals and music of Jongmyo Shrine, the traditional form of musical storytelling “Pansori,” and the Gangneung Danoje Festival.
