UM: New NK Uranium Facility Not Helpful to S-N Ties

The Unification Ministry in Seoul says North Korea’s reported building of a new uranium enrichment facility is of no help to inter-Korean relations.

Ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-joo made the comment to reporters on Monday, saying that Pyongyang must fulfill its nuclear dismantlement obligations.

Lee said Seoul is concerned about the North’s nuclear activities and continues to cooperate with neighboring countries to closely monitor the communist state.

In particular, Lee said the North’s nuclear activities violate international accords, including U.N. resolutions and the September 19th Joint Statement. She stressed that the North should refrain from making any additional moves that could further raise tensions.

The ministry said that despite the report about the uranium facility, a South-North Red Cross meeting will open in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday as scheduled.
