China: N.Korea Agrees to Emergency 6-Way Talks

Beijing says Pyongyang has agreed to China's proposal to hold emergency discussions among chief envoys to the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear disarmament.

China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters Tuesday that during State Councilor Dai Bingguo’s recent visit to North Korea, Pyongyang demonstrated an attitude of proactive support to the six-party talks and agreed that China's proposal for talks would help prevent the tense situation from further escalating.

She added that China and North Korea have agreed to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, normalize relations among relevant nations and pursue long-term stability in Northeast Asia through the six-party talks. Jiang also said that the two nations will make efforts with relevant personnel to implement the 2005 Joint Statement of the Fourth Round of the Six-Party Talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Jiang went on to say that China asked Japan to proactively consider participation in the proposed emergency discussions during chief Japanese nuclear envoy Akitaka Saiki’s visit to Beijing on December eleventh and twelfth.
