'Comedy emperor' Lee Joo-il dies

Comedian Lee Joo-il died of lung cancer Tuesday at the National Cancer Center in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. Officials at the center said Lee was 61. Lee had remained in a coma after being admitted to the intensive care unit on July 31st. Diagnosed with lung cancer in mid-October last year, Lee became a symbolic figure in the nationwide aide anti-smoking drive and attended the opening ceremony for the World Cup tournament on May 31st. Nicknamed the "emperor of comedy," Lee enjoyed enormous popularity in the 1980s with his unique twangy accent and a "duck's ass" dance.
