South Korea has announced it will allow employees of South Korean firms operating at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex to enter North Korea on Tuesday.
A Unification Ministry official in Seoul says that despite concerns of further North Korean provocations, the government decided to allow the visits by the South Koreans as the South had ended live-fire drills in the Yellow Sea. It also said that there is a need to supply raw materials and food to the South Koreans residing at the industrial park.
The official added, however, that the ministry is urging the South Koreans to take care of their duties at the complex promptly and return to the South on Tuesday if possible.
A total of 466 South Korean employees will visit the North on Tuesday. Of them, 438 are expected to return to the South later in the day.
The ministry banned visits by South Korean employees to the industrial park shortly after the North’s artillery attack on the South’s Yeonpyeong Island on November 23rd due to safety concerns. Since the North’s attack, Seoul has only allowed vehicles carrying fuel and food for South Koreans residing at the industrial park to enter the North.
