A statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin has returned to Gwanghwamun Plaza after receiving a makeover.

The statue underwent a 40-day repair to correct 16 defects in the head and the handle of Yi’s knife.

The stand on which the statue sits was also repaired to withstand a magnitude 8.0 earthquake and winds of up to 100 kilometers an hour.

Despite some criticism that the knife of the Joseon Dynasty admiral is Japanese in form, the Seoul metropolitan government decided to keep the 40-year original figure of the statue intact.
