Radio Free Asia says the remains of 19 U.S. soldiers who fought in the Korean War have been located this year after thorough identification procedures.

The U.S.-funded broadcaster quoted a Pentagon official as saying Tuesday that the remains of 17 American soldiers were found in North Korea and the remains of two in South Korea.

According to the report, the remains of a total of 145 U.S. soldiers have been returned to the U.S. since 1982. The report said that the majority of the remains of some eight-thousand U.S. soldiers that have yet to be found are presumed to be in the North.

Work to excavate the remains of American soldiers who fought in the Korean War has been suspended since 2005 in the wake of North Korea’s nuclear standoff.
