According to a provisional tally by Korean Broadcasting System early Tuesday, Typhoon Rusa, which struck the Korean Peninsula last weekend, has left 135 people dead, 75 still missing, and forcing 70,000 inhabitants to flee to safety. Rusa, the worst typhoon to hit the country in 43 years, also caused some $335 million dollars worth of livestock, ships, household and business damage, leaving a large area without power. Traffic on two highways, 24 state roads, 41 local roads and two railways is still disrupted. Hardest hit was the eastern coastal city of Kangneung, which received 870.5 millimeters of rain Sunday alone, the highest daily precipitation level recorded since official meteorological observations began in the 1930s.
