S.Korean Firm Begins Operating at Gaeseong

An additional South Korean company began running a plant at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea on Monday.

The addition brings the total number of South Korean businesses operating at the inter-Korean joint venture to 122.

The Unification Ministry in Seoul said that the South Korean company DSE completed the construction of a plant at the industrial park in May of last year and was given the go-ahead to employ 160 North Korean workers in November.

The ministry said that the opening of the plant is not subject to Seoul’s ban on inter-Korean trade and investment, as its construction was completed before Seoul announced the ban on May 24th of last year.

Seoul’s ban is part of retaliatory measures for the North’s sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” naval vessel in March of last year.
