Seoul: NK Proposal for Dialogue Lacks Sincerity

Seoul's Vice Unification Minister Eom Jong-sik says North Korea’s recent call for dialogue lacks sincerity.

While appearing on a KBS radio program Friday, Eom said that North Korea’s request for dialogue would be considered sincere if it first dismantles its nuclear program and takes responsible measures regarding its sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” naval vessel and its shelling of the South’s Yeonpyeong Island.

The vice minister also pointed out that the North is proposing inter-Korean talks be held while at the same time blaming South Korea for deteriorating inter-Korean relations.

He said that North Korea’s proposal --- which was made jointly by the government, political parties and social organizations --- is part of North Korean propaganda to promote its idea of unification.

In a Wednesday statement, North Korea called for an unconditional and early opening of talks between Korean authorities.
