NK Requests Resumption of Inter-Korean Talks

North Korea has made a new proposal for a round of inter-Korean talks after making a similar proposal Monday.

The North's Guidance Bureau for Comprehensive Development of Scenic Spots sent a telephone message to South Korea’s Unification Ministry on Wednesday proposing talks in Gaeseong to discuss ways to resume tourism to the North’s Mount Geumgang resort.

North Korea’s Central Guidance Bureau for Special Zone Development also sent a message calling for working-level talks in Gaeseong to discuss issues related to the Gaeseong Industrial Complex on the ninth of February.

North Korea also sent a message in the name of the North Korean chief of the Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Consultation Office in the North, expressing regret that South Korean personnel had not returned to the office as had been expected. It urged that operations of the office be normalized soon.

In response to the calls for talks, the South’s Unification Ministry urged North Korea for responsible actions regarding the North’s sinking of a South Korean naval vessel and its artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island.

The ministry also demanded a promise from the North to end further provocations and for Pyongyang to respond to calls for inter-Korean talks to confirm the North’s sincerity about denuclearization.
