Damage from typhoon Rusa tops 4.2 trillion won, or over 3.3 billion US dollars

The national anti-disaster authorities said Friday that typhoon Rusa, which pounded the country last weekend, has caused a record-high 4.29 trillion won or 3.34 billion US dollars in property damage. This is almost quadruple the previous record of 1.07 trillion won of havoc wreaked by Typhoon Olga in 1999. In a provisional tally as of 6 a.m. Friday, local time, the National Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters said that 120 people are confirmed dead and 64 missing, as a result of the tropical storm. Authorities added that the extent of the damage will rise further when anti-disaster officers reach flood-hit areas cut off from the outside, such as the eastern coastal cities of Donghae, Sokcho and Samcheok. The number of casualties is expected to top 200 when the cause of 27 other deaths and disappearances occurring Saturday and Sunday are confirmed.
