Nat’l Flower Named Natural Monument

South Korea’s national flower, the Rose of Sharon, has been named a natural monument.

The Cultural Heritage Administration says that the designation was given to two Rose of Sharon trees, one in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, and another on Baengnyeong Island, near Incheon.

The tree in Gangneung is believed to be 110 years old and the thickest among Rose of Sharon trees found in Korea with a circumference of 146 centimeters.

The one in Incheon is about 100 years old and is the tallest Rose of Sharon tree in the nation at six-point-three meters.

Both trees retain the features of the Rose of Sharon variety indigenous to Korea.

Rose of Sharon trees typically live for 40 to 50 years.
