S.Korea: Inter-Korean Talks are Separate from 6-Way Talks

South Korea says it will not connect inter-Korean talks with the resumption of stalled multilateral talks on North Korean denuclearization.

A senior South Korean government official said Wednesday that Seoul’s requirement that North Korea take responsible actions regarding its recent military provocations on South Korea are not a condition for the resumption of the six-party talks.

The official told reporters after a meeting between South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg that North Korea must pursue sincere actions on the denuclearization issue before the multilateral discussions can resume.

The official went on to say that both South Korea and the U.S. have reconfirmed their position that North Korea’s uranium enrichment program goes against the North’s international obligations, including U.N. Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and a joint statement agreed to by Pyongyang in 2005 on dismantling its nuclear program.

The official said that accordingly, Seoul and Washington will continue to cooperate closely to discuss ways for the international community, including the UNSC, to address Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
