Parliament Awaiting NK Letter

The National Assembly said that it hasn’t yet received a letter from the Supreme People’s Assembly in North Korea proposing parliamentary talks.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Thursday that the Supreme People's Assembly sent a letter to the South Korean National Assembly a day earlier, proposing to hold parliamentary talks between the two sides.

National Assembly spokesman Han Jong-tae said that the letter has yet to arrive in the South Korean legislature, adding that the assembly will decide on a reaction after getting the letter.

The National Assembly Secretariat expects the letter to come through the Office of South-North Dialogue, but a Unification Ministry official says nothing has been seen so far. The official added that nothing has come through the Panmunjeom truce village channel, either.

The state run media said that the proposal for talks is aimed at “soothing acute conditions on the Korean Peninsula and improving inter-Korean relations.”

The KCNA went on to say that holding talks between the two parliaments is quite natural as the two countries are working on high-level military talks.
