Inter-Korean Working-Level Military Talks Fail

South and North Korea have failed to reach an agreement on the second day of the preliminary, working-level military talks held in the truce village of Panmunjeom.

Ministry of Defense spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters Wednesday that the talks began at 10 a.m. and recessed 50 minutes later. The talks resumed at around 2:20 p.m., but ended after about ten minutes. Kim said that the meeting ended without plans for further preliminary talks as the North Korean delegates unilaterally walked out of the room.

The two sides failed to narrow the gap on their positions regarding the higher-level military talks’ date, venue, and agenda on Wednesday as well as on Tuesday.

A government source said South Korea stated that it wanted to discuss the North’s torpedoing of a South Korean naval vessel and its shelling of Yeonpyeong Island first and then talk about easing military tension. The source said that the North, however, wanted to discuss them all together at a higher-level meeting.

The source also said it appeared that the North wanted to be briefed on discussions regarding its provocations and move onto agendas that it wanted, such as demanding the South to stop its psychological warfare against the North.
