NK Military: No Need to Continue Talks with S.Korea

North Korea's military said Thursday that it feels no need to continue talks with South Korea, accusing Seoul of rejecting dialogue and the improvement of inter-Korean ties.

The North's Korean Central News Agency carried the military's statement after working-level talks with South Korea on Tuesday and Wednesday ended without an agreement. The two-day talks failed to reach consensus on the date and agenda for higher-level military talks.

A government source said following the meeting on Wednesday that South Korea's delegation had proposed discussing the North's recent provocations at the higher-level talks before addressing the issue of easing military tension.

According to the source, the North wanted to address the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island and the sinking of the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan as part of discussions on easing tension. Additionally, the North had sought to demand an end to the South's psychological warfare measures.

In the statement released Thursday, the North said the South only feigns interest in dialogue but is in fact rejecting it.

It said that Seoul's "villainous" intent is to block the will of neighboring nations to resume the six-party talks and to continue confrontation, while failing to appease requests at home and abroad that Seoul change its anti-North Korean policies.
