S.Korean Military Alert for Contingencies

A South Korean military official said Friday that no unusual activities by the North Korean military have been detected following the abrupt end to inter-Korean military talks held earlier in the week.

The official said that the North Korean military is currently conducting winter military drills. The exercises, which include artillery loading drills, are being conducted in ways similar to previous years.

However, the North Korean military did, unlike in years past, conduct amphibious ambush drills using hovercrafts at a naval base close to the Northern Limit Line, or the inter-Korean maritime border.

The South Korean military has been bolstering its monitoring of North Korea due to the possibility that Pyongyang could heighten military tension through shows of force. Potential provocations involve the firing of short-range missiles during the annual Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises between the U.S. and South Korea in March.
