A survey shows that six out of ten North Korean escapees who have settled in South Korea and have sent money to North Korea at least once have sent part of the subsidies they received from the South Korean government to the North.

According to a survey of 350 North Korean escapees who are 30 or older and have lived in South Korea for more than one year, 71 percent of respondents answered that they have sent money to North Korea. Of them, 66 percent sent part of the subsidies they received from the South Korean government.

The survey was conducted by a civilian group promoting the unification of the two Koreas called the “Organization for One Korea.”

Nearly 53 percent of the North Koreans who sent money to the North said that 30 percent of the money they were transferring was paid to brokers as commissions. Four-point-five percent paid commissions as high as 50 percent.

The Unification Ministry gives six million won to each North Korean escapee to help them settle in South Korea.
