U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said Tuesday he was very much encouraged by the success of the historic visit by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to Pyongyang, and his talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. Annan hopes that the resolve of the two leaders to settle the past and address existing concerns will lead to a speedy normalization of bi-lateral relations. The statement, made through a spokesperson, said the Pyongyang Declaration, adopted at the summit, is a landmark contribution to regional peace and security.
