Korean driver's license holders to receive same privileges in U.K.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) said Thursday those who possess a Korean driver's license will be able to operate motor vehicles in the United Kingdom without the need to take additional tests. MOFAT said regulations on the mutual acceptance of driver's licenses issued by the other country will come into effect Friday, with actual use beginning Sept. 30. The bilateral arrangement means Korean nationals living in the U.K. can receive a British license without having to go through the inconvenience of applying for and passing local driving tests. Seoul has been working with London since 1995 to forge the agreement, with the later forwarding its acceptance in April 2001. Britain said at the time it will give driver's licenses to Korean passport holders who got their Korean permits before 1997, and had no reported cases of accident for five years.
