UM: Inter-Korean Cooperation on Baekdu to be Reviewed

South Korea says inter-Korean collaboration is needed to address potential natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Seoul said Friday that it would review a proposal made by North Korea on Thursday for the two Koreas to cooperate on a project related to a possible eruption of Mount Baekdu, a dormant volcano.

Unification Ministry spokesman Chun Hae-sung made the remarks on Friday in Seoul, adding that relevant government agencies, including the Korea Meteorological Administration, are currently discussing the issue.

Seoul will review North Korea’s proposal, as experts at home and abroad are steadily making the case for such a move.

North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said Thursday that North Korea’s earthquake authority has proposed inter-Korean efforts to prepare for a possible eruption of Mount Baekdu. There have been predictions that Baekdu could erupt soon.
