Japan Quake Has Little Impact on Domestic Tourism, Hotels

Domestic tourism and hotel industries have experienced little impact from the massive earthquake in Japan.

Travel agency Hanatour said Monday that about ten-thousand reservations for tours to Japan were canceled last week, but the cancellation were offset by reservations for tours to China, the Americas and Europe.

Reservations for China jumped 108 percent, while those for the Americas and Europe rose 68 percent and 51 percent, respectively.

Modetour also said that the number of tourists visiting Japan plunged, but reservations for other regions, such as Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, grew by 20 percent from a year ago.

Domestic hotels also saw little change in their reservations as employees in foreign companies operating in Japan evacuated to South Korea.
