Scholars Stress History Education on Dokdo

South Korean scholars have urged the nation’s schools to significantly enhance their education on the values and history of the Dokdo Islets as Japan is set to approve on Wednesday school textbooks that are likely to lay claim to South Korea’s easternmost islets.

In a seminar in Daejeon on Tuesday, the head of the Dokdo Institute, Shin Yong-ha, criticized that Tokyo's move will again bring about Japan's previous intention to encroach Korean territory, adding Seoul should make sure that Tokyo understands the Dokdo issue should be resolved for the future of bilateral relations.

Lee Doo-hyung, chief of an institute and education on Korean history, said that class lessons on the Dokdo islets should be included in an introductory training course for history teachers.

Kim Hwa-kyung from the Northeast Asian History Foundation said that history classes should refrain from making groundless claims on history and teach balanced historic facts.
