Second Round of Inter-Korean Volcanic Talks Launch

The two Koreas have begun their second round of expert discussions on a potential volcanic eruption at Mount Baekdu in North Korea’s city of Gaeseong.

At the meeting, which opened at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the South Korean delegation is expected to request that North Korea offer materials and documents related to volcanic activities at the mountain to precisely understand the situation at Mount Baekdu.

The two Koreas agreed on the need of joint research on the matter during the first meeting in South Korea’s city of Munsan on March 29th. However, they failed to find common ground on the method of research.

South Korea is stressing that a preliminary study through exchanges of related data is necessary prior to launching a joint research project. Meanwhile, North Korea believes that an on-site inspection should be conducted first.
