Plundered Ancient Books to Arrive Thursday

South Korea will receive the first batch of ancient Korean books that France has promised to return on Thursday.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Wednesday that the first shipment of “Oegyujanggak” books will arrive at Incheon International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The first batch will include 75 books out of the 297-volume “Oegyujanggak” collection that was looted by French soldiers in 1866.

The books will undergo customs procedures and will be then transported to a secure storage place at the National Museum of Korea via a special vehicle.

The culture ministry said that the rest of the books will be returned in three additional installments until May 27th.

The ancient royal texts, which had been stored at the National Library of France, were for personal use by the king and include some 30 rare books that do not exist in South Korea.

Oegyujanggak, or “Outer Gyujanggak,” was an auxiliary facility of the “Gyujanggak,” which was the royal library during the Joseon Dynasty.
