Korea Communications Commission Chairman Choi See-joong has stressed the need to actively vitalize areas related to smart TVs, including hardware, contents and network.
Choi made the call during a full session of the National Assembly’s Committee on Culture, Sports, Tourism, Broadcasting and Communications on Wednesday as he noted that a “smart revolution” is unfolding in the broadcasting and communications market.
He said in order to secure competitiveness in smart TVs, the commission will seek to establish a standard for connection of smart devices, support the making of high-quality broadcasting contents and promote smart TV ads.
Choi added that in order to lessen people’s burden regarding communications costs, the commission will continue to seek to expand competition in the communications market and lower subscription fees and basic rates for communications services.
However, on KBS’s plan to raise its monthly license fee hike, Choi said the plan needs to be actively reviewed in a bid to normalize the financial structure of public broadcasting. He said it would be desirable to use the hiked amount in expanding production costs and public duties.
