Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has decided to hire a disabled person as a news anchor to better serve its role as a public broadcaster. The decision is the first of its kind in the country.

In a statement Tuesday, KBS vowed to partner with disabled people and increase programming aimed at expanding their welfare.

KBS says it will start a news section delivered by a physically challenged person in a bid to change biased social perceptions of the disabled.

The segment will be broadcast regularly.
