Korean Embassy Seeks to Help Bolivian Tribe Adopt Hangeul

South Korea’s Embassy in Bolivia is carrying out a project for a Bolivian tribe's adoption of the Korean written language, “Hangeul” to preserve their oral language.

The Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that the embassy in La Paz has been working on the project for the Aymara tribe since last July.

The undertaking was launched by South Korea’s Ambassador to Bolivia, Kim Hong-rac. Kim based the project on a successful case regarding the Cia-Cia tribe in Indonesia, which adopted Hangeul as its written language.

The Aymara tribe has a population of around two million. The tribe has an oral language but uses Spanish when writing since it has no written language.
