Royal Ancestral Rites Held in Seoul

Royal ancestral rituals of Jongmyo Shrine were held in Seoul on Sunday. The rituals and music are on the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The rituals, on their tenth anniversary since being on the UNESCO list, began with ancestral rites at an annex shrine at half-past-nine in the morning. From eleven-twenty a.m. there was a royal procession past the Joseon-dynasty Gyeongbok Palace and more rituals at the main shrine.

The ancestral rites proceeded according to Confucian ceremonial procedures. The music for the rituals, which is a No.1 important intangible cultural asset, played during the ceremony.

The Jongmyo rituals are ancestral rites at the shrine for past kings and queens. They are held every first Sunday in May.
