Cardinal Emphasizes Spirit of Sharing, Mercy Ahead of Buddha's Birthday

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk has issued a congratulatory message to Buddhists nationwide to mark Buddha’s birthday next Tuesday.

In the message sent to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism on Monday, Cheong emphasized the importance of sharing, mercy and practice of asceticism.

The cardinal said Buddha’s teachings played a key role in enabling the Korean people to make advancements during its long history. He added that Buddha’s teachings on life, nature, respect, truth, endless mercy and constant practice of ascetics are virtues that all people should follow.

Cheong said many people both at home and abroad are suffering from continuous economic hardship and natural disasters, adding that the spirit of sharing and mercy are the most essential values that people need at such times.
