The Ministry of National Defense began investigating allegations Monday that former National Defense Minister Kim Dong-shin ignored an army intelligence report warning of a North Korean naval attack in June. On Saturday, the ministry removed Major General Han Cheol-yong, commander of the 5679 Unit, from his post after he made public amilitary intelligence report on North Korea during an annual parliamentary audit into the ministry the previous day. The ministry organized a 10-member team to look into Han& 039 s allegations that he warned the former defense minister about potential North Korean provocation in the Yellow Sea weeks before the June 29 inter-Korean naval clash. Five South Korean sailors were killed and 19 others wounded in the deadly encounter, in which 13 North Korean sailors were also believed to have been killed and 17 others injured. The military investigation will be focused on whether Han& 039 s report included a detailed description on the possibility of a North Korean naval attack and what action Kim took when he received the report. The team will also determine whether Han& 039 s disclosure during the parliamentary audit violates regulations to protect military secrets. Han denied the pro-government Millennium Democratic Party& 039 s allegation that the rival Grand National Party was behind his disclosure in an attempt to embarrass the government ahead of December& 039 s presidential election.
