South Korea is trying to expand the exchange of math and science teachers with the United States.
Education, Science and Technology Minister Lee Joo-ho met in Washington D.C. with Dr. Subra Suresh, the director of the U.S. based National Science Foundation. The two agreed on the need to expand the exchange of math and science teachers between their nations in order to strengthen public education.
The minister also visited the education bureau and education council in Fairfax County, Virginia and discussed sending Korean students majoring in teaching as interns to the U.S.
The South Korean Education Ministry said it will further discuss details of the teachers' exchange with the U.S., including the time, size and budget, and finalize a plan in the near future.
In the past, teacher exchanges with the U.S. were only held on the school, city or provincial levels. The ministry says the government will now support the project.
