74% of Middle Schools Raised English Hours

Seven out of ten middle schools in the country have increased English classes since the 2009 revised curricula were introduced this year.

The revision allowed individual schools to freely adjust a maximum 20 percent of class hours per subject.

The Education Ministry examined the three-year curricula of freshmen students at over 32-hundred middle schools nationwide and found that nearly 74 percent of the schools have increased English classes from the standard 340 hours.

More than half of the schools also increased math class hours to above the standard 374 hours.

But the ministry says the increased hours measured on a weekly basis is only four tenths of an hour more for English and three tenths of a hour more for math.
