S.Korean Civic Groups Demand Return of Plundered Pagodas

South Korean religious groups are demanding the return of pagodas that were allegedly stolen by Japan in the early 20th century.

The Lay Buddhist Association for Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and an organization advocating the return of cultural assets to Korea claimed that two stone pagodas were taken from Pyongyang and Incheon by a Japanese civic foundation. The pagodas are currently on display in the Okura Shukokan Museum of Fine Arts in Tokyo.

The Yuli Temple Stone Pagoda was built during the Goryeo Dynasty, which ruled Korea from 918 to 1392. A Japanese businessman who founded the museum is thought to have taken it from Pyongyang to Japan between 1910 and 1920.

The Pagoda from Incheon is a five story Goryeo Dynasty artifact that was allegedly taken to Japan by the museum in 1918.
