More Korean Historical Relics Likely to be Added to UNESCO List

A Joseon Dynasty document and records on the May 18th Pro-Democracy Movement will likely be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Korea has applied for the inclusion of Ilseongrok, a Joseon Dynasty royal journal on kings’ daily lives, and the May 18th movement records in the UNESCO list.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said that UNESCO will decide on whether to include the Korean historical documents in its World Heritage List in a meeting, which will open in Manchester, the U.K., on Sunday.

An administration official expected that the two Korean historical documents would be included in the UNESCO list saying that their inclusion was recommended in a previous preliminary review. UNESCO will make a decision on May 25.

If Ilseongrok and the May 18 movement records are added, South Korea will have nine historical relics on the UNESCO list.
