S.Korea Considering Opening Nat’l Ballet School

The government may establish a national ballet school as a measure to foster talented ballet dancers.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism asked Chugye University for the Arts in April to research the feasibility of founding the school. The ministry is expected to make a final decision on whether to open it in July.

Domestic ballet dancers have been demanding the establishment of a national ballet school in order to develop the Korean ballet sector. But some are voicing opposition to the idea, saying that ballet is not popular enough in South Korea to consume state funds.

The opposition added that other dancing fields, such as traditional Korean dance and modern dance, don’t operate exclusive national schools.
