The fourth and last batch of ancient Korean royal books that French troops looted from Ganghwa Island in 1866 has arrived in Seoul.
Seventy-three books from the 297-volume Oegyujanggak Uigwe collection arrived at Incheon International Airport Friday morning.
The first batch of the ancient books was returned on April 14th, the second on April 29th and the third on May 12th in the form of a permanent lease.
The collection, which was part of a royal library during the Joseon Dynasty, had been stored at the National Library of France since the French invasion. The books describe the protocols of royal ceremonies and rituals in the form of writings and drawings.
The government plans to hold a ceremony marking the return of the books in Ganghwa Island on June eleventh and later hold a similar event at the Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul.
The books will be revealed to the public during a special exhibition at the National Museum of Korea from July 19th to September 18th. The books are also expected to be displayed across the nation in traveling exhibits.
