The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said Saturday that Korea will have knowledge-based industrial compounds across the country, starting next year, over a five-year period. In the compounds will be three sectoral clusters: production, research and development, or R&D, and business service. The government has a five-year plan to increase industrial complexes and will offer not just industrial infrastructure such as land, water and electric power but R&D facilities. Under the plan local governments can apply for the central government's designation of an industrial area to secure the state-of-the-art industries such as biotechnology (BT) and nanotechnology (NT) industries. The government will earmark some space for smaller firms in those compounds, to help companies establish plants and to cut red tape. Possible sites will be publicized at the end of February every year. To move into the designated industrial area hopefuls, however, have to follow some regulations.
