Jogye Order Announces it Will Normalize Relations with Government

The nation’s largest Buddhist sect, Jogye Order, has announced that it will normalize its relations with the government, ending the discord which started late last year over a budget cut for temple stay tourism programs.

Venerable Jaseung, head of the Jogye Order, told a news conference on Tuesday that the sect will lift its ban on the access of government officials and ruling politicians to temples in order to normalize its relations with the government and focus on self-reflection and reform.

The announcement comes six months after the Grand National Party railroaded this year’s budget bill in December last year to slash state aid for temple stay tourism programs.

The Jogye Order plans to launch an organization soon to oversee the sect’s self-reflection and reform movements.
