President Kim Dae-jung called on information business leaders Wednesday to make joint efforts to narrow the digital divide between the rich and the poor. In a message sent to the Third World Knowledge Forum opening in Seoul, Kim said he believes that, with concerted efforts, we can expand distribution of computers and the dissemination of computer training to low-income families and developing countries. He said by doing so, we can help increase their income and enhance economic development more easily than with traditional economies. The World Knowledge Forum opened Tuesday for a three-day run nder the theme "Knowledge in a World of Risk: A Compass Towards New Prosperity." Over 1,000 high-profile figures are attending, including Secretary General Donald Johnston of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development and Managing Director Mamphela Ramphele of the World Bank. Kim said the world is in the middle of a knowledge and information revolution, and utilization of knowledge constitutes the core of global competition.
