S.Korea Discusses Mt. Geumgang Asset Issue with Private Firms

The Unification Ministry held a discussion with private South Korean companies regarding the assets that were seized and frozen at a North Korean resort last April. North Korea has threatened last week to dispose of the assets.

At the discussion on Tuesday, the Unification Ministry’s Inter-Korean Exchanges and Cooperation Bureau chief Seo Ho met with officials from six companies that invested in the Mount Geumgang resort. The firms that were present at the meeting include the Korea Tourism Organization, Hyundai Asan, and the Emerson Pacific Group.

North Korea sent a message to the ministry last Friday stating that it will dispose of the seized government assets as well as the frozen assets of Hyundai Asan and other companies at the Mount Geumgang resort. The North has demanded that concerned South Korean government and business officials visit the resort before the end of June.

In April, North Korea seized the family reunion center and the cultural center owned by the Korea Tourism Organization and froze privately-owned real estate, including the Mount Geumgang Hotel.
