Private Universities Show Mixed Reactions on GNP's Tuition Cut Plan

Private colleges and universities have shown mixed reactions over the ruling Grand National Party’s plan to cut college tuitions.

An official from a private university on Thursday welcomed the plan, noting it calls for the government’s financial support. The official added it is a burden for colleges to spend 500 billion won in scholarships, but colleges will have to bear that burden in order to resolve the rise in college tuitions.

An official from another private college, however, said that although the ruling party’s plan could ease the burden on students, it would hinder the progress of universities due to frozen tuitions and reduced investments.

Some universities are weary of the plan, saying it is hard to determine at this time what kind of effect it will have.
