Korean, Japanese Buddhist Sects Console Quake Victims' Souls

A Buddhist rite aimed at consoling the souls of the people who died during Japan’s devastating earthquake in March took place last Friday.

The service, which was jointly organized by South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect, Jogye Order, and Japan’s Soto sect, was held at a temple in Miyagi Prefecture’s capital city of Sendai.

At least three people took part in the ceremony, including the heads of the Buddhist sects. They prayed that the souls of the quake’s victims would rest in peace.

Buddhist monks of the Jogye Order that participated in the service prayed for the quake victims’ souls by dancing traditional Korean Buddhist dances and playing small cymbals.
