North Korea returned to South Korea a body of a South Korean resident, which the North had found in its waters. The exchange took place at the Panmunjeom truce village at around eleven in the morning.
The Unification Ministry official said Friday that North Korea’s Red Cross Society sent a notification to the South, notifying the South that one South Korean body strayed off into waters off South Hwanghae Province.
The official said it appears that the North Korean authorities believe that the deceased was a South Korean due to a South Korean resident registration ID card on the body. The South Korean official said that the body is that of a 43-year-old man, identified as Go, who resided in Seoul.
According to the Unification Ministry, the North has transferred South Korean bodies to South Korean authorities a total of three times since 2000, including one time in 2003 and another in 2005. The official said South Korea has, since 2004, transferred a total of 51 North Korean bodies that had floated into South Korean territory via rivers or the sea.
