S.Korean Civilian Group Seeks Permission to Send Flour to NK

A South Korean organization seeking reconciliation with North Korea has applied for a permit to send large amounts of food aid to the North.

The Unification Ministry said the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation has requested to send one-thousand tons of flour to the vulnerable people in Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province on Thursday. It has also applied for approval to send 35 tons of flour and two tons of baby formula on Saturday to kindergartens and childcare facilities in South Pyeongan province.

The South Korean government banned support to the North by civilian groups after North Korea’s attacks on the Cheonan naval vessel and on the island of Yeonyeong last year. However, the government has been allowing certain humanitarian aid to infants and other vulnerable groups from March this year.

The ministry has to give yet approval to organizations to send rice and flour to the North.
