Ancient royal books that France returned to South Korea after 145 years have been revealed to the public for the first time Tuesday.

The National Museum of Korea has on display 71 out of the total 297 “Oegyujanggak” volumes, which describe the protocols of royal ceremonies and rituals through writings and drawings. The exhibit also showcases 165 related artifacts including a map of the “Oegyujanggak,” the Joseon Dynasty royal library where the ancient books were stored.

The books were looted by French troops from Ganghwa Island in 1866. They had been stored at the National Library of France since the French invasion and were returned to South Korea between April 14 and May 27 in four batches.

The exhibition, which runs until August 18th, is divided into six parts and includes three-dimensional audiovisual activities.
